The Carolwood Pacific Railroad History

Walt Disney’s passion for trains was reinvigorated by Disney animators and train enthusiasts, Ward Kimball and Ollie Johnston, particularly after he visited the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1948.

In 1950, he built a 1/8th scale live-stream railroad on his five-acre estate in Los Angeles. He named it Carolwood Pacific Railroad (CPRR) in reference to his address at 355 North Carolwood Drive, Holmby Hills.

The miniature railroad included 2,615 feet of tracks complete with a trestle bridge and a tunnel. The steam locomotive, Lilly Belle, was designed after the Central Pacific No. 173 engine and crafted by Disney Studio machinist, Eddie Sergeant. The miniature train became a popular attraction, with many visitors from Disney’s home enjoying a ride on it.

The red barn, a duplicate of his family’s barn in Missouri, served as a control center and workshop. Inside, Walt managed his train through his Carolwood Pacific electric control panel.

In 1997, when the Disney family decided to sell their property in Holmby Hills, Diane, Walt Disney’s daughter, stepped in to save the barn from demolition. Dismantled, the historic structure was relocated to Griffith Park. There, it was restored and is now maintained by the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum, a non-profit organization of live steam enthusiasts.

Walt Disney’s Train-Inspired Legacy

Walt Disney’s passion for trains was not just a personal hobby, but also a significant influence on his professional work, particularly in the design of his theme parks. It is said that his Carolwood Pacific Railroad served as an inspiration for Disneyland in California.
