Cruising along tortuous roads of Santa Monica Mountains, led us to a peaceful oasis dedicated to the god Venkateswara, the Malibu Hindu Temple. This large sanctuary emerged from the scenery to welcome worshipers and visitors.

A pinch of history
- Built-in 1981 over a 4.5 acres area.
- Originally constructed in a traditional South Indian style.
- It’s one of the largest Hindu temples on the West Coast.
- The Hindu Temple Society of Southern California owns and operates it.
Architecture

Before entering the temple, we gazed up at the architecture. The tower is characteristic of the south Indian Dravidian style. It can be recognized by the multiple layered pavilions. What a contrast with the blue sky and the Malibu Mountains in the background.
Temple complex

This temple is divided into two complexes. The upper is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara and the lower to Lord Shiva. Both of them have sanctuaries dedicated to other deities.
We removed our shoes as we passed through the large gate to enter the upper complex. We walked around the main court and look at deities nestled in the walls. Then, we entered in the main hall. Incense was diffused while a family was performing a ritual. We walked quietly to the colorful altar joining prayers.

Hollywood connection
I was surprised to discover that this temple has some Hollywood connections. Indeed, two movies have been shot here: Beverly Hills Ninja in 1997 and Jeans in 1998. More recently, in 2006, Britney Spears’s son was blessed in a ceremony.

What a divine surprise!
